TYPE OF RIDE: Circular off road MTB ride, with big hills and big smiles.
DIFFICULTY RATING: Easy to Hard. Depending on distance and speed ridden – the twisty singletrack gets more challenging the faster you ride.
WHEN: 2nd September
APPROXIMATE START TIMES: 8-10am
FINISH: ALL riders must be back by 5pm.
WHERE: Woodcote, Nr Reading, Oxfordshire / Berkshire – The heart of the Chilterns. In the village hall, in the centre of the village
DISTANCE(S): 100 / 75 / 50 / 25 km’s
WHY DO THE RIDE: If you like sumptuous singletrack, exploring new trails, meeting new riders, want an exciting new challenges, but also the back up and like following arrows and NOT getting lost! Last year was a great success and everyone wanted to come back for more, so here we are.
NOTE: The village hall is in the recreation grounds, right next to the Children’s playground. There will be shelter, hot & cold drinks, cakes
WHAT BIKE: A hardtail (front suspension only) bike is absolutely fine for this area, as the trails are mostly flowing singletrack with rooty sections. However the long distance and numerous rooty sections easily justifies bringing a full suspension bike if you have the choice, for an easier time on your bum.
WHAT TYRES: Good fast, all round tyres with rounded edges work well on this terrain when dry. If it’s a bit wet though, some deeper and square edge treads are handy for the fast corners.
PRICE: £15.00 (but a few quid more for on the day entries)
NOTE: The routes mostly share the same trails, with the shorter routes peeling off the 100km route so people can ride together as much as possible – it is not just one 25km loop repeated.
TOP TIP: It is fine to change the distance you are doing (up or down) on the day, and the option to continue on the 100km route comes at the 55km mark.

There are also children’s playgrounds at the start/end.

Here is what was said about the event in 2009
On Saturday 22 August, nearly 150 hard-as-nails riders turned up to Woodcote near Reading, to take on one of the most challenging new events in the BHF’s events catalogue; the Chilterns Off-Road Bike Ride.
Setting the standard as one of the most technical courses we’ve yet developed, the Chilterns Off-Road 2009 offered 40, 60, and 75 mile routes crossing vast areas of cornfields, delving through dense woods and incorporating dramatic dirt-track drops. Making the most of the Chilterns Ridgeway’s challenging geography, even the most seasoned of mountain bikers were tested to the limit.
Grahame Webb of JP Morgan, who took on the 60 mile route said:
“Please thank all the organisers and marshals working on the ride – an absolutely brilliant course was laid out for us, and everyone along the route was friendly and a really good atmosphere ensued. We had some great sponsorship too which is really encouraging. I personally had a cracking time.”

Please note, all routes will be fully signposted, however we provide maps because it’s always worth having them. Signs do sometimes go walkabout, you may miss a turn, and it’s good to see how far is left to go, where the hills, pubs, etc are, and you can also use it come and ride it again by yourself sometime.
Cheers,
Max

Max,
Many thanks for organising an excellant event. I really enjoyed the 50km ride in spite of all the rain. The mud made some of the sections more technical, but it was a good course and well signed. The cakes were very good as well!

Great event Max, loved the route, pity you couldn’t keep the rain away. Say thanks to your Mom for cleaning my glasses at the checkpoint (she’s a legend) in less than comfy conditions. Cakes and hot shower at the end were brilliant…. we’ll be back next year.
