Just north of Machynlleth is the excellent Cli-machx trail which winds high into Dyfi forest before firing you down superbly technical singletrack descents that seem to go on forever.
Back in (the old Welsh capital in the south of Snowdonia) Machynlleth there are the three old school XC routes of Mach 1, 2 and 3 which take you out into the Welsh wilderness on natural trails.
