Fjallabak Track, Iceland

This 293km (182 mile) route

The Fjallabak Nature Reserve, pronounced “fee-at-lah-bahk”, means “mountain back” in Icelandic, has been sculpted by volcanoes and geothermal activity, leaving it covered by lava, sands, rivers and lakes.

Although not technical this is a tough ride, with significant climbing and volatile weather, with strong winds, river crossings and minimal facilities along the way. There are huts though, to help with logistics and water refils, but you will need to be self sufficient, especially regarding bike repairs. The rewards for venturing into the desolate land are worth it though, with amazing wilderness, stunning colours and thermal pools.
