Dubbed “The Camino of the East”, the Via Transilvanica, "the road that unites", is a long-distance tourist route of 1,400 kilometers that crosses Romania diagonally, from Putna to Drobeta Turnu Severin and is intended for hiking, cycling or horseback riding.
The route is doable on a gravel bike, but a MTB is more comfortable, especially on the sections between Punta to Bistrita and Caransebes to Valea Cernei and in the middle near Campu Cetatii, and from Cuigar to Sarmizegetusa and beyond Fundatura Ponorului..
The route is signposted with painted markings, signposts, and every km there is an individually carved andesite bollard, bollards that form probably the longest art gallery in the world and accompany travelers throughout their journey.
