Ponale Path, Lake Garda

The Ponale Path (Sentiero del Ponale) is a historic trail that was once used as a mule track connecting Riva del Garda to Valle di Ledro. Today, it's a popular route for cyclists and hikers alike (so try to avoid peak times if you can).

The dirt trail has signs and runs through tunnels carved into the limestone rock, and overhangs Lake Garda for the first 4km. The scenery is stunning, with cliffside paths beside the lake, but with limited facilities, it is best to bring some sustenance for the journey.

The path starts near the center of Riva del Garda and follows the old Ponale road along the cliffs above Lake Garda. From Riva del Garda the path is mostly downhill, but also some sections with steep descents and narrow passages, is busy and close to cliff edge (with a fence), so not for total beginners.

Return leg: You can either return the same way you came or take an alternative route back to Riva del Garda, or as we do, continue to Lake Ledro. See the Valle di Ledro cycle path.
