Otago Central Rail Trail, New Zealand

The 152 km trail follows the former Otago Central railway line between Middlemarch and Clyde and is New Zealand's most famous cycle trail and The Original Great Ride offers some of the best cycling in New Zealand.
Experience Central Otago's big open skies with incredible scenery and steeped in our local history, along the gravel track which has a gentle gradient, making it ideal for intermediate and recreational cyclists.
Route Highlights:
- The Poolburn Gorge, with its towering cliffs and stone tunnels, displays early 20th century engineering skills.
- Omakau original railway station is now a café
- At the start in Clyde, is home to vineyards of Central Otago, known for their world-class Pinot Noir.
Tips for the Ride:
- Break up the ride over a few days to soak in the sights.
- The trail’s well-maintained gravel paths suit hybrid or mountain bikes.
- Late spring brings fields of lupines in bloom, while autumn covers the trail in golds and reds.
