Cammino Retico, Rhaetian Gravel Trail, Italy

The Cammino Retico bike route aka the Rhaetian Gravel Trail runs through the same areas as the walking route, to provide a 290km (180 miles) route with nearly 8,000 metres of climbing.

The route is not too rough, making it suitable for gravel bikes, as well as e-bikes, with possible charging options along the way too. The route was designed  for slow tourism away from crowded  routes off the beaten track, offering a combination of history, scenery and culture.

About half of the route is on secondary asphalt roads away from traffic while the remaining half is a combination of gravel and cycle paths, but due to the physical nature and terrain, is not suitable to novices or families.

When to go: Basically avoid the winter. March to the end of October, with autumn and spring both offering beautiful (and quieter) times to visit, but the summer providing the most stable weather.

The Cammino has been designed  as a 7-day route, although could be done quicker if you want to push yourself. Note the stages take into account the difference in altitude rather than the distance. Remember also  to get a stamp at the end of each stage.

E-bikes: There are affiliated private hosting resorts at the end of each stage where you can charge e-bikes, as well as public charging stations.
