North Downs Way Riders Route - July

RRP £225
OUR PRICE £0

A new National trail for cyclists which our very own Max Darkins (of Rough Ride Guide) finished writing up (in September 2022) for Kent County Council.

The route allows cyclists, for the first time, to follow closely along the ancient Pilgrim’s route from Farnham (in Surrey) to the coast of Kent and we’re very excited to be organising the first fun, social, supported self-guided ride along it to celebrate.

Starting in Farnham you’ll ride along the stunning North Downs escarpment, through pine and broadleaf woodlands, and then the sweeping agricultural countryside of Kent along ancient stone tracks. After passing through the historic cities of Rochester and Canterbury, you’ll arrive at the coast some 230km (143 miles) later, at the stunning seaside town of Whitstable, famous for their oysters and fresh seafood.

Did you know pilgrims travelling to visit (St. Thomas Becket’s grave in) Canterbury wanted to make quicker ground than a trot, but not as fast as a gallop, so they coined the term ‘Canterbury Gallop‘ which was shortened to ‘a canter’. This verb also describes our trip pretty well too, with three days of steady riding and site-seeing along the way.

What bike? The first half of the ride is definitely more (hardtail or short travel full-suspension) MTB-orientated with some singletrack and steep, rough trails at times. However the second half is much more gravel bike friendly, so it could all be ridden on a gravel bike although we’d recommend a MTB.

What we do: Before the event we offer advice and guidance, GPX files, daily route description with route profile and refreshment stops. Each day we meet you for a daily briefing, providing useful information and advice, take your luggage (on to the next hotel) and provide mechanical (and emotional) assistance along the way.

Twice daily we will meet you with refreshments along the way, offering water, tea & coffee, savoury snacks, sweets, Jaffa cakes, Jelly Babies and amazing homemade cakes and flapjack by Mrs D.

A support vehicle will enable access to your day bag, as well as holding a selection of spare parts and tools, giving you peace of mind and confidence that you will be able to complete this epic ride one way or another.
